Happy birthday to legendary writer Ernest Hemingway … and happy Caturday to you! The author of classics such as “The Old Man And The Sea” and “A Farewell To Arms” was a known cat fanatic, who once said “One cat just leads to another.” The photo above from the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum shows Hemingway hanging with one of his cats in his home in Cuba (we have Hemingway photos, too, but alas, not with his kitties). The Hemingway Home and Museum in Key West is also known for its cats, which roam the premises freely and are descendents of Hemingway’s six-toed cat Snowball. There’s even a book called “Hemingway’s Cats,” which we have in our research collection. We also have plenty of books written by him, so check one out in his honor! Happy Caturday, and happy birthday, Hemingway!

It’s been 11 months since my last post and boy am I feeling like a something the cat draged in about 6 months ago and left beneath the couch to rot. Baghdad after the withdrawal of coalition forces is a mess. The Government of Iraq is a corrupt bunch of thugs masquerading as statesmen… Laughable if it weren’t true…. The billions spent prosecuting the shock and awe, was good money spent on bad things. The media split when Americans stopped dying and the few who still report are relegated to some fourth column on page 12 or 13. Bad, bad things still happening in this part of the world . Forget about the death, destruction, and unjust shit going down here every fucking day. How about the thousands of untold stories of Iraqis who are just like you and I. These poor people are struggling with all same bullshit and all we do is argue about some puppet show juice headed lying pieces of crap who are vying to become or remain in some bullshit political position so the can continue to fatten their pockets and rob the rest of us of a future. Nice…. Good work if you can get it…. The only thing I can think of at this stage of the game is” what the fuck were they thinking”…. Well I gotta go and fatten my pockets… It rough profiting off of others misery…..

Many of you know those spectacular images of burning computer parts and beautiful, sad young men, taken in some God-forsaken corner of polluted Ghana where the ‘West’ has dumped all its obsolete toys to be ‘recycled’.

Now, here’s Southern Africa’s answer: we can do apocalyptic burning and degraded human beings on rubbish tips, too. Portuguese photographer Jose Ferreira’s images of the “Trashland of Maputo” , taken in the dump of Huléne (just a few meters from Maputo’s airport), are supposedly meant to make us move beyond the “caricatures of the poor and homeless, who are often camouflaged between common jokes and cartoons from the civilized world.” He adds that the people in these images, “who have empty eyes and shapeless smiles,” make the experience of their lives “more human.”

It’s not that lives like this do not exist; it’s not that this is a compelling subject (why do we allow such suffering? Why permit such degradation in fellow human beings?), or unworthy task to force those who are either ignorant of such suffering, or usually like to turn the other way to really stand and contemplate the lived reality of these Others. It may be that Ferreira makes us think about all that we discard. But there’s something that’s rehashed here – too much of the whiff of exploitation, for the value of shock, rather than an invitation into a space of contemplation (and possibly, towards action).

And please: I know this isn’t about computer parts, or the discards of the West. But if you want to make your mark as photographer, why copy Pieter Hugo’s “Permanent Error“?

Tonight I fly to Dubai and then onto Iraq….. I’m looking forward to my return and the endless opportunities this invites… I will diligently seek out unique photo opportunities and post them on my blog… The experience of living and working in an austere environment is a unique and an educational lesson not learned in any school.
